Krabi is the perfect base camp for exploring the islands of the Andaman Sea, and is a laid back choice for people looking to chill out away from the crowds of Phuket or Koh Samui.
Krabi is a tropical paradise not yet succumbed to the mass tourism invasion. On Krabi you will not find the discos and clubs but you will come across a few friendly bars, and restaurants to hang out at.
The movie “The Beach” was filmed on nearby Phi Phi Island where you can scuba dive with tropical marine life. Along with all the other water sports and serious rock climbing to be found around Krabi, a new adrenalin rush can be had from cliff jumping off limestone rocks as high as 19m (60 ft.) into the crystal clear water below.
Make sure to take a longboat ride to Rai Leh beach considered to be one of the best beaches in the world.
Most people visiting Krabi arrive in Thailand via either Bangkok or Phuket.
From Bangkok it is a 12 hour bus ride or you can take a train from Hualamphong Station to either Trang or Nakhon Si Thammarat from where you will still need to take a bus or taxi to Krabi, a 4hr journey. By far the easiest option is to fly the 814 kilometres which takes 80 minutes.
From Phuket to Krabi you can take the bus which takes between 3-4 hours. Or for a slower but more scenic route catch a ferry with a stop at Phi Phi Island (a 5 hour journey).
Located on Thailand’s tropical Andaman coast Krabi is warm year round. December through March is the ideal time to visit when the humidity is not so high. Try to avoid September and October as these are the wettest months with temperatures above 30 ºC (86 °F).
