Koh Phi Phi (full name Koh Phi-Phi-Don), is situated in Krabi Province, south of Phuket off Thailand’s Andaman coast. Koh Phi-Phi-Don is the largest in a group of six islands and the only island which is permanently inhabited.
Koh Phi Phi has beautiful beaches and generally clear waters, and is surrounded by tropical coral reefs. Naturally this makes Koh Phi-Phi a popular destination for watersports including scuba diving, snorkeling and kayaking. There’s a nice trek up to the island’s viewpoint. Plus an interesting spot to get hike, kayak or catch a taxi boat to is Phi-Phi’s ‘Monkey Beach’ where you can spy some entertaining local wildlife.
Island hopping between other islands of the Phi-Phi group is a popular activity, most notably to nearby Koh Phi-Phi-Leh which gained fame when featured in the movie ‘The Beach’. Phi-Phi-Ley’s Maya Beach is an incredible setting of white sands, turquoise ocean and striking limestone formations which is well worth a visit.
Koh Phi Phi is a very small island and doesn’t have an airport.
The two nearest airports are Phuket and Krabi which have regular flights connecting with Bangkok and other regional hubs.
From Phuket and Krabi there are regular ferry crossings to Koh Phi Phi departing every couple of hours. Plus during peak season ferries also run between Koh Lanta and Phi Phi.
[If travelling on a tight budget and avoiding flying, both Krabi and Phuket can be reached by bus too, with regular service connecting Krabi and Phuket with the rest of Thailand].
Although temperatures are tropical all year round, the best months to visit Koh Phi Phi is between December and May during the hot, dry season. Conditions are best at this time, especially if you plan to enjoy water based activities.
During the summer months through till October/November there is more rainfall, so although many people do still visit at this time year need to be prepared for the possibility of showers.
