Khao Sok, in the mainland province of Phang Nga, is a natural and untouched rainforest that is among the most ancient in the world.
Like much of Thailand, the Khao Sok National Park has gorgeous landscapes, towering limestone mountains, sheer cliffs, beautiful waterfalls, caves, rivers and lush jungles, all surrounding a massive lake.
Within the national park, you can enjoy a number of activities, from camping on the lake and floating down the river in canoes or inner tubes, to trekking through the jungle and guided tours on the back of an elephant, winding through exotic flora and fauna and seeing wild animals. Another activity gaining popularity in in Khao Sok is exploring the depths and caves of the lake by scuba diving.
Khao Sok can be easily reached from several major tourist destinations in Southern Thailand. The island of Phuket is located just under two hours to the south by car. You can reach Khao Sok from Phuket by car or minibus by travelling North on route 402, then connect to route 4240 via route 4 and head inland a bit until you reach route 4090 and travel North again to Khao Sok.
From Krabi, also located to the South of Khao Sok, you can reach the national forest in just under three hours by car or minibus. Simply travel North and West via routes 4 and 415.
Both Phuket and Krabi have airports, so if travelling from Bangkok you could fly to either and tavel overland for the final leg.
Khao Sok has pretty nice weather year round. Because of its tropical location, there are really only two seasons, wet and dry. The dry season runs between December and March. There will still be some rainy days, but nothing like during the wet months. Beware of the monsoon season, which falls during September and October when heavy rainfall occurs. Temperatures are between 26 and 29 Celsius throughout the year.
