It’s certainly a good idea as the ferries do sometimes become fully booked.

If traveling from the other islands to Koh Samui (i.e. from Koh Phangan, Koh Tao), ferries only run 2-3 times a day and do often become fully booked. Especially during peak seasons.
So it’s a good idea to book your ferry ticket at least a few days in advance.

Between the islands you can use the Lomprayah catamaran or Seatran Ferry.
Ferry tickets can be booked online through their websites; http://www.lomprayah.com & http://www.seatrandiscovery.com respectively.

From Suratthani to Koh Samui, ferry crossings are more regular with departures pretty much every hour from the Don Sak pier. So it’s not so critical to book your ferry ticket in advance if coming from Suratthani.
