How can I get from Bangkok to Chumphon? Is train, flight or bus best?
Chumphon is about 550Km south of Bangkok, so you’re looking at either a short flight or lengthy overland journey.
Flights from Bangkok to Chumphon are operated by a domestic airline called Nok Air. Flights depart daily from Bangkok’s northern airport. For schedules and bookings, see http://nokair.com/
If you prefer to keep costs down, an overnight train is a good option.
Trains to Chumphon depart from Bangkok’s central Hualamphong train station (easy to reach using meter taxi or the MRT(underground) system).
An overnight sleeper train is a good way to travel, departing from Bangkok mid-evening. The beds are reasonably comfortable and very inexpensive. For example, a 2nd class air conditioned sleeper ticket comes in around 600 – 700 baht.
Timetable information is available on http://www.railway.co.th/home/Default.asp?lenguage=Eng
NB: The trains are popular with both Thais and tourists so do often become fully booked. So it’s a good idea to book your train ticket to Chumphon at least a few days ahead of your journey.
